Universal Design for Learning

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn. (CAST, 2017)  

UDL is a framework for guiding educational practice that:

  • provides flexibility in the ways information is presented to learners,
  • provides flexibility in the ways learners respond or demonstrate knowledge and skills, 
  • provides flexibility in the ways learners are engaged in learning,
  • reduces barriers in instruction,
  • provides appropriate supports, and  
  • maintains high achievement expectations for all students.
